Whether you work from home or an office, many find it a struggle to focus, be productive, and finish all their tasks.
Since becoming self-employed in 2013, I’ve built a successful business, launched numerous side hustles, completed many large projects for several clients at once, and worked far fewer than 40 hours a week while traveling the world and relocating to dozens of cities.
But my secret isn’t earplugs, coffee, “more self-discipline,” or a magical time-management app. (In fact, I don’t use one single productivity tool at all.)
Even without another disaster, it’s easy to see that change is speeding up. As far back as 1987, the U.S. Army War College defined a state called VUCA—short for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity—as an emerging new normal. We see VUCA in action every day, from the disruptive pace of new technology and automation to massive changes in how and where we work. Life, it seems, really is a state of constant flux.
The anxious uncertainty of the pandemic, combined with social and political unrest, combined with an information landscape dominated by a tribalized social media, is breaking us. Our days are fragmented by a fast drip of insistently panicked content that wrings anxiety, outrage, and fear from our autonomic nervous systems until we’re left exhausted and emotionally dry.
If you’ll excuse the understatement: this is not good.
